Computer Access : Hardware

When we think about using a computer with a child with disabilities, we need to take other things into consideration including the best position for the child so that we maximize their ability to see the screen and access the peripherals (keyboard, mouse or their replacements) used to control it. We also need to evaluate the best way to access the computer whether it be an alternative keyboard, trackball, touchscreen, or switch interface. Finally, we need to assess the child's preferences so that we can match interesting software that features his/her favorite character  or  activity.

While all this can take time and  energy, the pay off is well worth the effort.
