Communication : Low Tech

Simple, low-tech augmentative communication devices are a great way to begin teaching someone how to communicate. There are no prerequisites to using one, in fact, anyone, regardless of abilities can be included in activities that provide opportunities for communication. In other words, people learn to communicate by communicating!

Picture symbols are often used as a starting point. Devices that fit in this category can have a single message or multiple messages. Some even have levels that allow them to store even more messages. These devices are simple to program and inexpensive to purchase.

BoardMaker by Mayer-Johnson, used to create picture communication symbols and overlays for simple communication devices. Picture-symbols are often used to help AAC users identify the message they want to communicate when used in conjunction with communication systems that use voice output or as stand alone communication aides in settings where a device might get in the way like the bath or during meal times.

BigMack by Ablenet a popular,

single message communication system, the Bigmack lets users participate in  activities such as greeting, requestinga favorite snack, participate in storybook reading, and asking for help.  These are particularly useful in settings where a larger  display or device would get in the way or for communicators who are just learning the power of spoken words.
